About ECHL
The ECHL, or the East Coast Hockey League, is a minor professional ice hockey league based in the United States. The league was founded in 1988 and currently consists of 28 teams spread across the United States and Canada.
The ECHL is considered to be a step below the American Hockey League (AHL) in terms of skill level and player development, but it is still a highly competitive and entertaining league. Many players in the ECHL aspire to move up to the AHL or even the National Hockey League (NHL) one day.
The ECHL season runs from October through April, with each team playing a total of 72 regular-season games. The playoffs follow a four-round, best-of-seven series format, with the winner of the Kelly Cup being crowned the ECHL champion.
One unique aspect of the ECHL is its affiliation system with NHL and AHL teams. Many ECHL teams have working relationships with higher-level teams, which allows for player movement and development between leagues. This system allows NHL teams to develop and monitor their prospects at a lower level while also providing opportunities for players to move up the ranks.
Overall, the ECHL is a competitive and entertaining minor professional ice hockey league that serves as a stepping stone for many players hoping to achieve their dreams of playing in the NHL.
